Fiber Optic Security System

With many new advancements evolving in the fiber optic technology, communication has been made simpler, faster and more economical. Use of light for transmitting information and receiving information is becoming more common day by day. When more and more people become aware of the ease associated with the technology, more and more connections are setup world-wide.  With the increase in the fiber optic medium, it is also necessary to maintain the safety and security of the medium. So a security system has to be established for the connection to avoid tapping and tracking.

The security measures associated with the fiber has been booming ever since the invention of this technology in tele-communication. If the system is not secure, no privacy can be maintained between any two persons who are engaged in communication. Especially when the communication involves video/ audio sharing, privacy is necessary. Let us now discuss some of the methods that are implemented for this security measure.

Fiber-to Internet protocol video connection is one method of offering security to video communication. The analog signals are digitized and sent through the fiber in the video surveillance technology. There is no complication in the transmission that is made but the reliability in the transmission is the biggest issue. Before optical fibers were used, coaxial cables carried the information from camera to monitoring stations. Though it is widely used, its transmission distance is limited and the signal degrades over long cables. Also, it cannot be trusted for security purposes. Thus digitization era began which replaced coax with Cat-5/ UTP cable. Along with this cable high speed Ethernet connections are being used to send video images (that are digitized). The protocol that is being followed is the standard Internet Protocol.

As far as security is concerned, computer networks play a major role. Thus greatest level of supervision and control has to be maintained. May it be a network infrastructure or electronic devices like cameras, servers etc.  Supervising the network components is vital by which the overall integrity of the network can be assured.

An enterprise can be secure only if it is security system protected. Some enterprises provide tools to monitor the entire infrastructure of the network. V’Nes or Video Network Enterprise solution is one such example.

Transmission of analog information using amplitude and frequency modulation caused many security problems.  With the evolution of fiber optic cables, capable of sending digitized information, security is no more a threat. The interference due to electro magnetic radiation is also very low. It thus serves as a backbone for digitized high speed networks.

Apart from the security measure adopted it should not be forgotten that the core of optical fiber is made of glass and not metal. So this offers immunity to lightning and cross talk interference. Although, fiber cables cannot be easily tapped, it is our responsibility to take precautionary measures and make this form of communication very reliable.

Wireless transmission of audio information through radio frequency waves (for example, microwave) have made the communication very reliable. Cross talk and interference have become words of the past. If full security is ensured in fiber optics communication, we can even use it for military and other crucial government purposes.

Testimonials

Lomoveishiy – Finland

I needed those to connect my PC on the third floor to have internet access in that room, and ISP installed their modem on the first floor only. After dropping fiber patch cables, plugged in all cables into these media converters at both sides, and link came up instantly. Was much easier than I thought!

Raymond – USA

Great experience – units worked straight out of the box – just needed plug in cables and we were done. I also like the possibility to enable jumbo frames, while we do not have a need for this feature at the current moment it’s great to have this option.
