| FTTH ONU/ONT powering | Despite that PON stands for Passive Optical Network, the ONT/ONU that is allocated on customer premises requires power to work. Many powering schemes have been deployed, tested and installed during past few years, but they can be easily divided in two big groups: centralized and local powering schemes.

In centralized powering scheme, power is provided from central network site together with data. Backup source is usually batteries and/or engine generator while main source is general AC converted to DC on local premises. Primary source might be solar powering, wind energy or fuel cells. Backup power can be provided with different types of batteries or even flywheel energy storage.
The ONT/ONU is feeding from own power source in local powering scheme. This power is again commercial AC, but it is separate for each ONT/ONU in the network. Solar energy and fuel cells might be used for main power line and different energy storages including batteries for the backup one.
