| Designing the distribution section for FTTP networks | OSPs output cables are purposed for distribution to individual customers. Depending on the neighbourhood layout the design might differ, but main elements are the same: distribution cables, access terminals/enclosures and drop cables.

Cabling layout for 32 homes is shown in Figure 1. This FTTP network uses a 1x32 optical splitter.
The access terminal (a breakout point) is located either on poles, underground, in above-ground shelters, or in an indoor wiring closet. These enclosure vary in sizes and physical characteristics.

Above-ground pedestal design requires above-ground cross-connect enclosure fixed on pedestal to anchor the unit in place. The inner dome of the equipment protects it from dirt, moisture and debris. Second, exterior dome, protects from water-flood and environment. This type of enclosure can accommodate from 24 to 288 splices.
For all different design (aerial, pole mounted or manhole) is used cross connection enclosure Such enclosure are accommodating up to 96 splices or more
