Practical applications of LAN extenders

Situation 1: Hospital is building new campus, which is near to main campus, but not close enough for connecting it directly to the LAN that is allocated in the main campus.

Situation 2: Company built multiple storage buildings which use one data base for orders and other operations. All these buildings could not simply added to the main LAN.

Situation 3: Military forces are making permanent camp in 1.5 km from the main base. Officers need to work with all the data that are in the main base server.

Solution: Use LAN Extender.

AN-LAN-EXT-T

Figure 1: Example of IP extender (AD-net’s AN-LAN-EXT)

LAN & IP extender uses single twisted pair of wires and uses VDSL (Very high datarate DSL) technology which has only theoretical limit of 152 Mbit/s downstream and 12 Mbit/s upstream. VDSL standard use two different frequency bands for upstream and two for downstream. It is using two standard modulation techniques which are not compatible, but basically have the same performance. These techniques are called DMT (Discrete multi-tone modulation) and QAM (Quadrature amplitude modulation). DMT is mostly used technology. It has bit rates in range from about 26 Mbit/s symmetric for a loop of about 1500 m, up to 100 Mbit/s symmetric for a few hundred meters. This means that VDSL can be used for bandwidth applications for HDTV, Voice over IP (telephone services) and general Internet access using single connection.

Testimonials

Lomoveishiy – Finland

I needed those to connect my PC on the third floor to have internet access in that room, and ISP installed their modem on the first floor only. After dropping fiber patch cables, plugged in all cables into these media converters at both sides, and link came up instantly. Was much easier than I thought!

Raymond – USA

Great experience – units worked straight out of the box – just needed plug in cables and we were done. I also like the possibility to enable jumbo frames, while we do not have a need for this feature at the current moment it’s great to have this option.
